India’s Push for Healthy Aging: IISc to Establish Centre for Advanced Research in Aging

Aging is an inevitable part of life, but science is rapidly evolving to make the process healthier and more fulfilling. In a significant move toward addressing the challenges of aging and age-related diseases, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has extended its support to the Longevity India Initiative at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This support will facilitate the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Research in Aging, a crucial milestone in India's healthcare and scientific landscape.

A Major Step Towards Healthy Aging

The announcement came during the Longevity India Conference 2025 – Rise for Healthy Aging, hosted at IISc. This initiative aims to explore India-specific biomarkers, create organ-specific aging models, and study the gut-brain connection. With an interdisciplinary approach, the center will develop strategies to promote healthy aging through biology, data science, and clinical research.

The increasing average lifespan in India brings new healthcare challenges, particularly lifestyle-related diseases. By integrating cutting-edge research on aging mechanisms, IISc’s new center will work towards solutions that enhance longevity while maintaining quality of life.

The Vision: Living Longer, Healthier, and More Active

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasized that longevity should not just be about increasing lifespan but ensuring a healthier, more active, and engaged life. He stressed that with advancements in medical science and the adoption of good habits, individuals can remain active throughout their lives.

Navakanta Bhat, Dean of Interdisciplinary Sciences at IISc, highlighted the importance of understanding aging at both molecular and genetic levels. He believes that bringing together experts from multiple disciplines will lead to innovative solutions for promoting longevity.

The Focus Areas of Aging Research

The Longevity India Conference 2025 put a spotlight on the latest scientific developments in aging research, covering four major themes:

  1. Biological Aging Research – Investigating how aging occurs at the cellular and molecular levels.
  2. Biological Mechanisms of Aging – Studying genetic and epigenetic factors that influence longevity.
  3. Lifestyle Medicine – Understanding how diet, exercise, and mental well-being impact aging.
  4. Holistic Health Approaches – Exploring integrative strategies to promote longevity.

Paving the Way for the Future

With India's aging population on the rise, initiatives like the Centre for Advanced Research in Aging are essential for tackling the healthcare challenges associated with longevity. By focusing on scientific advancements, preventive healthcare, and lifestyle modifications, this research center aims to redefine aging in India.

The establishment of this center at IISc marks a progressive step toward ensuring that people not only live longer but live better. As research progresses, India could become a global leader in aging sciences and longevity solutions, shaping a healthier and more sustainable future for the elderly population.
